The
Pearl is the oldest and most valuable gemstone since ancient civilization. It is believed that Pearl is a symbol of the
moon and has the magical power of bringing prosperity and long life. The pearl
is a gift of nature which man can not improve.
STRUCTURE:
The
Pearl is a hard object produced within the soft tissue of a living shelled
mollusk. The Pearl is composed of Calcium Carbonate in minute crystalline form
like the shell of a clam. The ideal Pearl is that which is perfectly round and
smooth but may occur in other shapes (Baroque Pearls). Now- a- days most of Pearls are cultured
which means that a foreign material is surgically implanted into a mollusk and
left to grow layer of shimmering nacre. It takes 2-4 years to grow saltwater
Pearls and 2-7 years for freshwater Pearls.
Pearl
farming is called “Periculture”.
Freshwater & Saltwater Pearl
It
is very difficult to differentiate the pearls with regard to the source they
come from by simply seeing, as fresh water and saltwater pearls may sometime
look quite similar.
Saltwater
pearl grows within pearl oyster which lives in oceans. Saltwater pearl oyster is
generally cultivated either in protected lagoons or volcanic atolls.
So
far as freshwater pearl is concerned, it forms in various species of freshwater
